Physiotherapy for Babies (0–12 Months)

At Mama's Physio Expert we offer gentle, specialised physiotherapy for babies from birth to 12 months. The first year of life is a crucial time for motor development, and early support can make a significant difference. Our baby physiotherapy sessions are designed to support your little one’s physical development and help them reach their milestones comfortably and confidently.

Why See a Baby Physiotherapist?

Babies develop at their own pace, but certain signs may suggest they could benefit from physiotherapy input. A physiotherapy check-up is a helpful way to ensure your baby’s development is progressing as expected, even if there are no clear concerns.

We commonly support babies with:

-
Delayed motor milestones (e.g. late rolling, sitting, crawling, or standing)
-
Torticollis (tight neck muscles causing head tilt or a preference to look one way)
-
Plagiocephaly (flat head syndrome)
-
Asymmetrical movement patterns
-
Tightness or stiffness in muscles and joints (hypertonia)
-
Low muscle tone (hypotonia)
-
Prematurity-related developmental delays
-
Birth trauma or complicated deliveries
-
Reflux-related postural issues
-
Difficulties with tummy time
-
Unusual movement patterns or preferences (e.g. only using one side of the body)
-
Toe walking or tight heel cords (in slightly older babies)
Initial Assessment – A Developmental Check-Up

We recommend all parents consider an initial baby physiotherapy assessment as a proactive developmental check-up — especially if their baby was premature, experienced a difficult birth, or if they simply want reassurance that everything is on track.
The initial assessment includes:
-
A detailed discussion about your baby’s birth, medical history, and current development
-
A gentle, play-based examination of your baby’s movements, posture, muscle tone, and reflexes
-
Advice and strategies to support age-appropriate movement and play at home
-
A personalised plan if any concerns are identified
Parents often find this session reassuring and informative, whether concerns are present or not.

What Happens in Ongoing Sessions?

If ongoing physiotherapy is recommended, sessions are tailored to your baby's specific needs and goals.

Therapy may include:
-
Guided developmental play and positioning techniques
-
Tummy time strategies to build strength and head control
-
Hands-on techniques to improve muscle balance or mobility
-
Parent education and home exercises to continue progress between sessions
-
Support for use of orthotics or referrals, if needed
We work closely with parents to make physiotherapy feel like part of everyday playtime, empowering you with tools and knowledge to support your baby’s growth.
